Monarch 5K Run making a difference in cancer research

A St. Paul run raised more than $5,000 to support cancer research and honor the late wife of one of the event’s organizers.

The annual Monarch 5K Run took place Sunday morning at Harriet Island in St. Paul. Organizers estimated more than $5,000 was raised for the Rene and Brian McCoy Cancer Recovery Research Monarch Fund at Hamline University.

The run honored Brian’s late wife Rene and her fight with pancreatic cancer. More than 100 runners took part in the event.

“She had a great spirit, beautiful person inside and out,” Brian said.

The fund provides money for students to participate in cancer research at Hamline University. Organizers said that support helps students work on research during the summer.
