Reports of abuse, neglect linked to taxpayer-funded nonprofit serving Minnesota kids

A residential psychiatric treatment facility in East Bethel that treats children with severe mental health and behavioral problems has remained empty since state inspectors briefly suspended its license earlier this year. 

Investigators cited an “imminent risk of harm” to residents at the facility operated by nonprofit Nexus Family Healing. 

Nexus leaders say the problems have been resolved and they plan to bring youth back in 2027, but 5 INVESTIGATES found repeated cases of maltreatment at East Bethel, as well as other Nexus locations across the state.  

The types of maltreatment, confirmed by the Minnesota Department of Human Services, ranged from neglect to physical or sexual abuse.
