Owatonna shifts proposed police site following pushback, but $65 million vote remains

Owatonna city leaders moved proposed police facilities to a new site as voters weigh whether to approve a $65 million price limit for new police and fire stations.

City officials shifted the site to a former Cemstone concrete site along W. North Street after a vote last week and buying additional land earlier this summer to make it happen.

Some residents had opposed the earlier location along the West Hills national historic site, and some also objected to the cost.

“Well, it is better,” Carl Wieman said.

Wieman said the new police site, less than a half-mile away from the West Hills campus and City Hall along W. North Street, starts to address some concerns about the earlier plan.

“That is a place that myself and many others have mentioned for many months,” Wieman said.
