Nearly half of Minnesota experiencing severe drought conditions

A lack of rain this summer in Minnesota is causing lower water levels in lakes and leaving some farmers across the state struggling heading into the harvest season.

The Minnesota DNR said 45% of the state is under a severe drought and nearly 90% is currently experiencing some level of drought.

Dan Glessing, president of the Minnesota Farm Bureau, says even with drought conditions, he believes most Minnesota farmers will still turn a profit.

“I do think we’re going to see a lot of good crops even still,” Glessing said. “With the technology we have in the seeds, they’ve been bred to stand some drought.”

The Twin Cities and much of Minnesota would need about 15 inches of rain over the next three months to end the drought.
