Frozen soil found during construction is pushing back the opening of Braemar Arena’s east rink and tightening ice time ahead of hockey season.
The city of Edina said the east rink at Braemar Arena will not be ready for its expected October opening during the arena’s $45 million renovation. The rink is now expected to open Jan. 1.
“You come across things that you don’t expect,” said Jesse Buchholz, GM of Braemar Arena. “Every hour of ice counts, and the community deserves to have reliable ice.”
At the east rink, crews found frozen soil under the dirt, 12 feet deep at its thickest point. Jesse Buchholz, general manager of Braemar Ice Arena, said spot tests were done last year, but the problem was not found until a full excavation.
