Convicted killer of St. Paul police officer Jim Sackett seeking parole, family pushing back

The ambush, assassination-style murder of St. Paul police officer Jim Sackett, Sr., in 1970 was an unsolved cold case for more than three decades.

A series of stories by 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS resulted in the case being reopened in 1994, with two men being convicted in 2006.

Now, the man police say was the triggerman in the murder, Ronald Reed, is seeking parole after serving just over 20 years of a life sentence in prison.
