Boys Soccer: Two late goals, last-second save get Wayzata past Edina in battle of unbeatens

Wayzata’s Ares Amani scored two goals eight minutes apart late in the match to give his Trojans a 2-1 lead over Edina, but it took a spectacular save by goalkeeper Lucas Woodrum in the final seconds to make it stick.

The teams arrived at Edina’s Kuhlman Stadium on Tuesday night with perfect records. Entering the match with a combined 9-0 record, they had outscored opponents 30-4.

Edina’s Desmond Quigley buried a rebound in front of the Wayzata net in the first half, sending the Hornets to halftime with a 1-0 lead.

With his Trojans still trailing 1-0 with 21 minutes remaining, Amani stepped up for Wayzata. His first goal came after a misplayed ball in front of the Edina net left him with an open goal to tie the match at 1-1. ...
