Minneapolis schools pre-certify max tax levy as parents call for accountability

Minneapolis Public Schools is weighing its next school tax levy while facing lower enrollment and a nearly $40 million deficit.

The school board took the next step in the tax levy process by voting to pre-certify the maximum levy as staff continues to review the numbers. At this time, the final levy could still increase or decrease.

“I think that we should maximize every penny the school system can get in Minneapolis. I don’t think our kids should suffer for financial mismanagement,” said Christian Glanville, an MPS parent. 

In 2025, the board approved a 12.59% increase that included a voter-approved tech levy totaling $20 million for tech infrastructure, system security and support training. 

A median household paid an increase between $84 and $96.

Last year, a 0.42% increase meant only a few dollars in payout for a median home.
