After ‘excessive’ overtime, Minneapolis police seek $20M more and aim to end 2027 under budget

Minneapolis police leaders are asking for $20 million more and say new overtime controls could help the department finish 2027 under budget.

5 EYEWITNESS NEWS sat through the three-hour discussion between Minneapolis police leaders and the City Council on Monday. During the meeting, police leaders said the extra $20 million would help the department end next year under budget for the first time in several years. Interim Chief Bill Peterson stopped just short of a promise not to overspend in 2027.

“Our commitment is that we are going to do everything possible under my leadership to ensure that we do not go over budget in 2027,” Peterson said.
