The University of Minnesota says it’s planning major budget cuts as leaders respond to rising costs and long-term financial pressure.

In a message to the university community, the University of Minnesota said it expects to reduce its overall budget by $225 million over two years. The university said that equates to about 12-15% of allocated operating revenue, though final numbers will depend on external factors.

A joint statement from University President Rebecca Cunningham and other officials said the school faces shifting enrollment trends, unpredictable state and federal funding and rising costs, adding that those pressures are part of long-term trends affecting colleges and universities across the country.
