Township race mistakenly appeared on Finlayson city ballots — here’s what it means for your vote

A ballot mistake in Finlayson led Pine County elections officials to tell city voters one race on their mail-in ballots will not be counted.

More than 200 voters in the City of Finlayson were sent a mail-in ballot that mistakenly included a write-in race for a Town of Finlayson Hospital District Board member. Pine County said that race was meant only for township voters, not city voters.

“It should not have been on the ballot at all,” said Pine County Administrator Kelly Schroeder.

“It is on the Town of Finlayson’s ballot correctly, but it just happened to end up on the city of Finlayson’s ballot as well.”

Schroeder, who is also operating as interim county auditor and treasurer, manages elections for the city and township separately.

“In elections-world we use ‘town’ instead of ‘township,'” she explained.
