St. Paul to remove 2 Flock cameras after council vote; Ramsey County Sheriff says county-owned cameras to stay

St. Paul leaders moved to remove city-owned Flock cameras after a council vote and public hearing.

The public hearing was held in the City Council Chambers directly following a regularly scheduled City Council meeting, during which members unanimously passed a resolution calling on city and Ramsey County law enforcement to stop using Flock license plate reader cameras. After the vote, in a joint statement, Mayor Kaohly Her and Police Chief Axel Henry said the two Flock cameras owned by the city will be removed.

“It’s our understanding our St. Paul employees have used this technology responsibly, but our public trust in these tools has eroded, and I’m very concerned about it,” St. Paul City Council Member Saura Jost said ahead of the vote.

The cameras in question automatically take a picture of the back of passing cars to capture the license plate number associated with that location.
