Jacob Herr has a new home and a new beginning.
“This place, I feel safer here than I would at a public park,” the 50-year-old says. “I’ve been homeless on and off here in St. Cloud since December 2018.”
But no more.
Herr is one of forty-eight people spending their first days at a newly opened Avivo Village homeless shelter in St. Cloud.
Avivo is a nonprofit that also runs a tiny home village in Minneapolis.
“They don’t push anything on you, but they want you to transition,” he explains. “Like, what do we need to do to get you into a place? How can we get you housed and get you off the streets permanently?”
Each client stays in a secure, lockable tiny home.
The village is located in a climate-controlled warehouse.
There’s counseling available for mental and physical health issues, and substance-use disorders.
