It’s a job that has its ups and downs.

Lee Bowser is the last known manual elevator operator in Minnesota. 

“You don’t find anymore manual operators in Minneapolis,” Bowser said. “We’re the only one that’s left in the Twin Cities.”

Bowser has worked at the Young Quinlan building in downtown Minneapolis for several years.

“There’s a legacy behind it,” Bowser said. “There’s always been females running the elevators over the years. The concept was the white-glove, blazer suits, jackets and pants. They had more of a stylistic feeling of greeting customers.” 

Bowser says meeting so many people has its highs and lows.

“You got to be able to have a positive attitude,” Bowser said. “Because people come in with a good attitude, a bad attitude, a good day, a bad day. You don’t know what...
