Simple driving and maintenance tips to cut fuel costs

Drivers can cut gas costs with a few simple changes in how they drive, what they carry and how they maintain their cars.

The U.S. Department of Energy says fuel-efficient driving habits and maintenance habits can save 10 to 40% on gas costs, which can add up to hundreds of dollars a year for most drivers.

Experts say easing up on accelerating and braking can save money. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, aggressive driving can lower gas mileage by 15 to 30% at highway speeds.

It also says that for every five miles over 50 mph, drivers can pay an extra 22 cents per gallon.

Excessive weight in a vehicle also uses more gas. Roof racks and cargo boxes can reduce fuel economy by 25% at interstate speeds, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. An extra 100 pounds in a vehicle can cost an extra three cents per gallon.
