Minnesota farm diesel costs among highest in US, report finds, over $100M higher than last year

Minnesota crop farmers could pay more than $100 million extra for diesel this year, a cost that farmers and state officials say could raise food prices.

That figure is according to Congress’ Joint Economic Committee, ranking the cost to Minnesota among the highest in the nation.

High fuel costs add to a growing list of challenges for farmers, and the report said those added costs are likely to lead to higher prices for consumers.

Randy Sorg is part of a fifth-generation Minnesota farm. With diesel costs not holding steady, he said the fuel farmers need is nearing record prices and that some operations may struggle to keep up.
