School closures, big questions: How much could Minneapolis Public Schools actually save?

On Tuesday, Minneapolis Public Schools unveiled three proposals for a district “transformation” that could close at least 14 schools. School board officials say the restructuring is a necessary step as the district faces declining enrollment and a budget gap of nearly $40 million.

But how much money will these proposals save the district?

“Year after year, principals and schools take the funding we provide them based on their enrollment, and they must make difficult decisions to do the best (with) what they have available,” said Dr. Lisa Sayles-Adams, superintendent of Minneapolis Public Schools.

The district is spread too thin, and consolidating students in fewer schools will funnel more money for programs into each school, administrators argued when presenting their options to the Minneapolis Board of education on Tuesday.
