Roy Griak Invitational turns 40, begins new chapter at Fort Snelling

One of Minnesota’s most cherished running traditions will enter a new era this week.

The 40th annual Roy Griak Invitational returns Friday, Sept. 18, with the University of Minnesota hosting one of the nation’s premier cross country events at Fort Snelling Golf Course. The move marks the first time in the meet’s history that it will not be contested at Les Bolstad Golf Course, where the event spent its first 39 years.

Despite the new location, those closest to the event insist the tradition remains unchanged.

“It’s Minnesota cross country,” University of Minnesota head coach Sarah Hopkins said. “Everybody who’s done the sport in this state has a connection to the Roy Griak Invitational in some way, shape or form.”
