The Vikings legendary safety is coming back for one more year, according to reports.
MINNEAPOLIS — The Vikings may be getting one of the best safeties in their franchise history back this season after all.
Harrison Smith will return to the team on a one year deal, according to ESPN Insider Ian Rappaport.
The former first round pick had stepped away from the team after the end of the last season but rampant fan speculation had continued to connect him to a return this year.
His presence would provide a major boost to the Vikings secondary, which lost free agent acquisition Jamal Adams in the team's first preseason game.
The Vikings used their first round selection on the safety out of Notre Dame back in 2012. Over the next 14 years, Smith would accumulate 1,100 total tackles, 21.5 sacks, 9 forced fumbles and 39 interceptions.
The six-time pro bowler is 37 years old, he has played 207 career games for the Vikings and currently is the NFL's active leader in career interceptions.
