New York high school student suspended on first day of school after refusing to throw out her coffee

CASTORLAND, N.Y. — A high school senior in New York was suspended on the first day of school after refusing to throw out her coffee. 

She and her mother described it as a deliberate act of "civil disobedience" meant to protest what the family claims was an illegally adopted school policy.

Julie Kaputa walked into her first period class at Beaver River Central School in Castorland, N.Y., on Sept. 3 carrying a coffee when her teacher told her to either drink it on the spot, throw it out or go to the office.
