Mayo Clinic will pay $50,000 after the U.S. EEOC found it unlawfully denied a religious exemption request for the COVID-19 vaccine.
ROCHESTER, Minn. — Mayo Clinic will pay $50,000 to settle a religious discrimination lawsuit after an employee was required to get the COVID-19 vaccine despite asking for a religious exemption.
The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission announced the settlement Thursday, saying Mayo Clinic unlawfully denied the Rochester, Minnesota employee’s request back in 2021. According to the EEOC, the employee was a security guard and requested accommodation to Mayo Clinic's vaccine policy, but Mayo Clinic "did not believe his religious beliefs were sincere."'
