Social media has turned extreme wellness habits into a trend called "maxxing," but health providers warn some of it does more harm than good.

CLEVELAND — Millions of Americans are turning to social media for health advice, but not all of it is safe.

It's called "maxxing" — pushing any health habit to the extreme in pursuit of the best possible result. Social media has applied the term to everything from tanning to protein intake.

The trouble, health providers say, is that the people pushing these trends aren't always experts. Dr. Alison MacKinlay, a family and lifestyle medicine physician at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, says the first step is checking in with yourself.
