A Maple Grove church is marking the growth of a garden program that uses church land to help feed people in the northwest metro.
Just behind Advent Lutheran Church, the Giving Gardens now include 78 plots used to combat hunger in the northwest metro.
Mackenzie Vang of Blaine said this was her first year off the waiting list for the Giving Gardens. Vang came to the United States from Laos in 1981 and has been a member of Advent Lutheran Church for many years.
Vang said she uses the food to help feed her family of 10.
“I really like it, I really appreciate it too for the church to have hearts and think about the community and make nature beautiful,” said Vang.
Betsy Cardinal, special projects coordinator at Advent Lutheran Church, said the idea began in 2007, when one volunteer looked for a way to use extra church land to help the community and address food insecurity.
