Japan has more than 100,000 people over the age of 100

WASHINGTON — Japan's centenarian population just hit a new record, with the country having more than 107,000 people who are aged 100 or older. It's the first time the country known for its longevity has recorded more than 100,000 centenarians.

According to the latest data from Japan's Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, the Asian country has 107,677 people who are at least 100 years old as of Sept. 1. The statistic is nearly 8,000 more people than the previous year.
