Minnesota Golden Gophers head football coach P.J. Fleck is facing scrutiny after a viral postgame moment showed him wiping a player’s blood on his face.

After Minnesota’s win against the Washington Huskies, Fleck hugged linebacker Maverick Baranowski, who was bleeding from a cut to his face, and wipes the blood on his own face.

Dr. Archelle Georgiou said any exposure to blood carries potential health risks, even if the risk is low. She said those risks can include bloodborne viruses such as hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and HIV.

Georgiou criticized Fleck’s behavior as irresponsible and said coaches can influence young athletes who look up to them. In this case, there is no information about the player or anyone around him.

“Any blood exposure, even if it’s low risk, is considered a risk,” Georgiou said.
