Grants help West 7th Street businesses invest in the future while preserving the past

SAINT PAUL, Minn. — Bright, freshly-painted and sprayed murals are popping up on buildings along St. Paul’s West 7th Street, as grants help small business owners invest in their future while preserving what makes the historic corridor unique. 

"We are the oldest commercial corridor in the state," said Julia McColley, executive director of the West 7th/Fort Road Federation (FRF). "Small businesses really are the backbone of West 7th.” 

FRF has awarded approximately $300,000 to roughly 25 small businesses over the past two years, McColley said. A round of funding was focused on public art and artist-led projects, she explained...
