The Minneapolis City Council discussed the future of violence interrupters on Tuesday.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey’s proposed budget cuts nearly $2.7 million in funding for groups in the program. A city audit found the Neighborhood Safety Department lacks oversight, raising questions about how taxpayer money is tracked.
“I know the city council really values violence prevention services that came across loud and clear,” Amanda Harrington, Director of the Neighborhood Safety Department, said. “They’re going to have to make really hard decisions during this budget time.”
Harrington says changes have already been made since the audit.
“We’ve done a lot of changes already. What we’ve been really digging into since the audit report came out is how we’re tracking things,” Harrington said.
