Diesel fuel spill in Mississippi River near Winona County dam

Up to about 50 gallons of diesel fuel spilled into the Mississippi River in Winona County on Monday afternoon.

Winona County Sheriff’s Office authorities say fire and emergency management crews were called to the area of Lock and Dam 5A around 2:45 p.m. after it was reported that fuel had spilled from a tugboat.

As many as 50 gallons spilled into the river, a spokesperson with the sheriff’s office said.

A containment boom was used to limit the spread of the fuel, the sheriff’s office said, adding that the “responsible party” hired an environmental cleanup company to clean up.
