Dakota County moves forward with preliminary tax levy increase of 18.5%

Dakota County commissioners voted Tuesday to set a maximum tax levy increase of 18.5% for next year.

The increase is just under the 18.7% hike recommended by the county manager and would result in about $140 more in property tax for a home with a median market value of $392,100.

Commissioners say the increased revenue will fill the budget deficit and make up for federal cuts to Medicaid and SNAP benefits, adding there’s still a $10 million hole.
