Army veteran receives Purple Heart 17 years after being injured in Iraq

Retired Army Staff Sgt. George O’Dell was honored at the Veterans Wall of Honor after Congressman Steve Womack’s office helped get his case reviewed.

BELLA VISTA, Ark. — An Army veteran received a Purple Heart on Thursday, Sept. 24, 17 years after he was seriously injured while serving in Iraq.

Retired Staff Sgt. George O’Dell was presented with the medal by Congressman Steve Womack at the Veterans Wall of Honor in Bella Vista, Arkansas

O’Dell was serving in Baghdad in 2009 when a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device detonated near his position, seriously injuring him.
