A Tennessee woman claims AI led to her wrongful arrest. Now she’s suing Fargo police for $10M.

Fargo’s police department is facing a $10 million lawsuit after being accused of violating a woman’s federal civil rights by using artificial intelligence.

Last year, a Fargo police detective issued an arrest warrant for 50-year-old Angela Lipps after facial recognition software flagged her as a match. It came from surveillance video tied to a bank fraud case Fargo police had been investigating since the spring.

She was arrested at her home in Tennessee in July and held in a county jail there for three months.

Then, Lipps was transported more than a thousand miles to Fargo and held in the Cass County Jail.

Finally, on Christmas Eve, prosecutors dismissed the case after bank and phone records showed she was in Tennessee while the crimes were being committed in Fargo.

Attorneys representing Lipps say the reason this lawsuit took six months to file is that she’s struggling with PTSD.
