Mayor Jacob Frey says the city has been "drastically undercounting" police overtime for years, something he wants to address in his new budget.
MINNEAPOLIS — Minneapolis police overtime is estimated to come in at nearly $23 million over budget for the year, and Mayor Jacob Frey says he intends to fix that in the future... just might not be how you expect.
Instead of issuing new limits on those hours, the mayor says the fix will be a "slight reduction" in overtime spending, and a big shift toward more realistic budgeting.
"We were drastically undercounting the dollar figure necessary in the budget to complete those overtime hours," Frey said during a briefing with reporters on Thursday. "$2.3 million (for overtime) was never anywhere close to accurate."
