(FOX 9) - Voters in Wisconsin have decided who will be their next governor, electing Democrat David Crowley to replace Tony Evers, as Republican Tom Tiffany conceded a "bitter" and "tough" defeat late Tuesday.

"We’ll see what the next chapter in life brings," Tiffany said in a concession speech, noting he was so far unsure about what his future in politics might bring.

"Thank you for believing in me as much as I believe in you," Crowley said during a victory speech on Tuesday. "I'm going to listen to you, I'm going to work for you, and I'm going to deliver the best way that I know how. I stand here tonight with great gratitude."

Who is David Crowley?

Crowley is the first African American to serve as Milwaukee County's top official and the youngest person elected to the office, at 33.

Crowley was elected to the Wisconsin Assembly in 2016, his first role as a public elected official. The Milwaukee native was then elected Milwaukee County Executive in 2020.

His win in the primary election was seen as a major upset, defeating Francesca Hong, a democratic socialist, after narrowly winning by half-a-percentage point. It came after suspending his campaign in July, then re-entering the race 24 days before the Aug. 11 election.

He was endorsed by Gov. Evers in the primary.

Who is Tom Tiffany?

Born in Wabasha, Minnesota, Tiffany previously served as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives in Wisconsin’s Seventh Congressional District, which comprises northwestern and north central Wisconsin.

Before that, he was a member of the Wisconsin State Assembly.

He was previously endorsed by President Donald Trump.

What they're saying:

"While tonight was not the outcome we had hoped for, I am incredibly grateful to the Wisconsinites who supported our campaign. I congratulate David Crowley on his victory. We both care deeply about Wisconsin, and I wish him and his family the very best as he prepares to serve as our next governor," Tiffany said in a statement following his concession. "I also want to thank my wife, Chris, our three daughters, and our entire family. I could not have done this without you. The issues we fought for remain just as important: lower property taxes, affordable utility rates, protecting our farmland, and restoring accountability in state government. My love for Wisconsin and belief in its future will never change."
