Weather IQ: What is the peak of fall foliage across the United States?

The autumn equinox is today — and even if it doesn't feel like fall just yet, the leaves are already starting to change.

As chlorophyll breaks down, other pigments will start to show through, allowing for colors to change to yellow, orange and red.

There's also a science to when it happens. Typically, the higher and farther north you go — like in the mountains — the earlier you'll see those fall colors.
