The pilot and a flight student escaped unhurt after the emergency landing, which temporarily shut down part of Interstate 10.
A small training plane made an emergency landing on Interstate 10 in the Florida Panhandle Monday morning, just barely missing overhead highway signs and passing vehicles before coming to a stop on the eastbound lanes. No one was injured in the incident.
The single-engine Piper PA-28 Cherokee, operated by Pensacola Air Flight School, was preparing to land at Pensacola International Airport just before 11 a.m. when the pilot radioed that there was a problem with the aircraft.
“Our oil pressure is dropping down into the red and we do have fumes in the cockpit from the oil,” the pilot said. “I don’t know if we’re going to make the airport. We are not making the airport, we’re going down on I-10.”
