Voyager 1, ‘The Odyssey’ and what we choose to send forward

For almost 3,000 years, we have been telling the story of a man trying to get home from his original odyssey.

Odysseus leaves Troy after 10 years of war and spends another decade wandering through a world of gods, monsters, shipwrecks and mistakes. He travels to the edge of the known world and nearly beyond it, but the direction of the story never changes: He is trying to get back.

This summer, Christopher Nolan brought “The Odyssey” to movie screens, resurrecting one of civilization’s oldest stories with its newest technology. Every generation seems compelled to build a new vessel for Homer’s old voyage. Perhaps that is because we have never stopped making it.

On Sept. 5, 1977, another voyager left home.
