WASHINGTON — Appointments for applicants for U.S. visas have been temporarily paused, according to the U.S. State Department. A State Department spokesperson said Tuesday that appointments for visa services will be "adjusted" at embassies and consulates worldwide in order to train staff to look out for applicants who may rely on public assistance when they get to the United States.
"A more prosperous America means ensuring that visa applicants are not likely to become a public charge," the spokesperson wrote in a statement to TEGNA, "and not likely to become dependent on U.S. public benefits reserved for qualified Americans in need."
