Todd Barnette stepping down as Minneapolis community safety commissioner at end of year

Minneapolis Community Safety Commissioner Todd Barnette will be stepping down from his position at the end of the year, a city spokesperson confirmed.

Barnette will remain interim commissioner until the end of the year while a search for a permanent commissioner proceeds.

Over the next five months, the spokesperson said Barnette will help to complete the search for the next police chief, oversee the work to open the South Minneapolis Community Safety Center and oversee community safety reform initiatives.

“While I have yet to decide my next chapter, my work is not yet complete. It has truly been an honor to serve the City I love and to work alongside the dedicated staff who show up every day to keep people safe in their homes, neighborhoods, and communities. Their commitment inspires me, and I’m grateful for the trust our residents and the mayor have placed in me,” said Barnette.
