Momentum was clearly on the opposing side, but Benilde-St. Margaret’s got it back just in time Saturday night.
The Red Knights scored 14 of 19 points in a 3-minute span late in the second half and held off Stewartville 66-60 for the Class 3A girls basketball championship.
Sierre Lumpkin made a couple 3-point shots early in the surge, and Olivia Olson added four clutch free throws as Benilde-St. Margaret’s earned its third title in school history. The others were 2006 and 2010.
Lumpkin finished with a career-high 21 points; Olson, a University of Michigan commit, scored 19 points and added a game-high 17 rebounds.
“It was a team win. Everybody stepped up and everyone contributed in different ways,” Olson said.
That was especially important as No. 2 Benilde-St. Margaret’s (26-6) played without Kendall McGee, a starting guard who injured her knee in the semifinal win.
