St. Paul to debate Flock cameras next week

As the city council president calls for the cameras to come down, St. Paul Police and the Ramsey County Sheriff say they keep the city safer.

SAINT PAUL, Minn. — At the intersection of Kellogg Boulevard and Smith Street are the only two Flock license plate reader cameras operated by the St. Paul Police Department, but Deputy Chief Kurt Hallstrom says the technology plays a big role in solving crimes. 

One high-profile example: in September 2024, police were very quickly able to find Seantrell Murdock after he murdered Lowertown artist Carrie Kwok as she painted a mural, because Murdock drove past the cameras, which took a photo, helping police begin to trace his license plate to where they found him in Belle Plaine.
