Secretary of State speaks on poll location recordings, defends voter vouching law

5 EYEWITNESS NEWS learned that the group behind undercover videos recorded on Primary Election Day visited at least 15 Minneapolis polling places.

Secretary of State Steve Simon is defending Minnesota’s voter vouching law, saying the videos leave out key safeguards in the process. He also believes the group may have broken the law.

The group associated with conservative activist James O’Keefe says its journalists were testing Minnesota’s voter vouching law.

One registered voter can vouch that up to eight people live in the same precinct, but that only establishes where they live. The person being vouched for still has to provide identifying information.

“They have to produce a driver’s license number or a state ID number or a partial Social Security number,” said Simon. “So that’s something you don’t see on the video.”
