Police warn renters of fake online listings

Eden Prairie police are warning renters about a scam using fake online listings for homes that are actually for sale.

Police said at least four cases have been reported this summer in Eden Prairie, though officers believe there could be more. They said scammers copy listing photos of single-family homes for sale and falsely advertise them for rent on Craigslist and TikTok.

The suspects also have prospective renters use a real estate company’s QR code for a self-guided tour of the property. Police said victims have lost thousands of dollars after sending deposits through Zelle or Venmo.

“I’ll say it’s extremely sophisticated. I’d call it craft and deceitful,” said Sgt. Matt O’Rourke of the Eden Prairie Police Department.

O’Rourke said the rent in each case has been about half the going market rate, which he said is the biggest warning sign. Police said that low price is also a major reason victims quickly send a deposit...
