Parents raise concerns over Minneapolis school closure proposals

Parents in Minneapolis are raising concerns as a district plan could close or merge up to 16 schools and move students.

New details released Friday on Minneapolis Public Schools’ transformation plan show three options that could take effect in 2027.

The district said the goal is not to cut costs but to attract more funding, and class sizes would not change.

Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS) said it is planning for about 200 students to leave the district. 

Minnesota schools receive an average of $21,000 per student in state, local and federal funding.

“It’s um, a lot of uncertainty and a lot of kind of chaos, with no clear gain,” MPS parent Max Lent said.
