One year later, Annunciation families continue to push for change at Minnesota State Capitol

After a gun violence prevention package failed to get over the finish line this year, parents with the Annunciation Light Alliance will try again in 2027.

SAINT PAUL, Minn. — Over the last calendar year, Annunciation Catholic Church families have had a near-constant presence at the Minnesota State Capitol.

In the immediate aftermath of the Aug. 27, 2025 mass shooting, the families and their supporters held numerous rallies on the capitol steps to demand lawmakers pass a comprehensive gun violence prevention bill. After a proposed special session fell apart in the fall, they took their advocacy indoors to the first-floor rotunda when the regular 2026 legislative session opened in February during the doldrums of winter. For months, they met with lawmakers, milled around the House and Senate chambers, and made their position clear on reforming Minnesota's gun laws.
