MnDOT closing Highway 280 turn to Broadway in effort to reduce risk of serious crashes

A turn that thousands of drivers use every day could soon disappear.

MnDOT says the intersection of Highway 280 and Broadway has seen years of crashes and close calls, and closing the left lane is the answer.

It’s a problem transportation officials say traffic control alone can’t fix.

“We’ve seen a lot of crashes at this intersection, and the most concerning type of crashes that we see are the right-angle crashes, where one vehicle runs into the side of another at highway speeds,” said Chris Bower with MnDOT.

To reduce the risk of serious crashes, MnDOT is proposing to eliminate the left-turn lane from northbound Highway 280 to Broadway and redirect drivers through Hennepin Avenue and Industrial Boulevard.

“We’re very fortunate that no one has been seriously hurt or killed in recent years, but someday that luck may run out,” Bower said.
