Minnesota mining could get boost after Trump administration announces over $2B in funding to the industry

The Minnesota mining industry is set to get a big boost.

The Trump administration announced last week over $2 billion in funding toward new mining projects, battery materials and rare earth alternatives, including over $180 million for mining education and training.

The grants are aimed at expanding the mining and critical-mineral workforce by dramatically increasing the number of people with degrees in those areas over the next two years.

“We’re thrilled this administration is doing something about it,” Colin Marsh with Mining Minnesota said. “We currently have a bit of a silver tsunami of mine engineers in this country, and a lot of them will be retiring, and there’s a huge gap. These types of jobs can be very exciting for young people that include travel, very high wages and a really exciting career.”

Schools like the University of Minnesota Twin Cities and Duluth could benefit from these new grants.
