MPD leaders say they've implemented tighter controls on overtime spending, after multiple years of overspending their budget
MINNEAPOLIS — Minneapolis Police leaders faced tough questions on Monday during a three-hour meeting about the 2027 budget with the Minneapolis City Council, as skeptical council members pressed the department for answers about cost overruns and overtime spending.
Led by Interim Chief Bill Peterson, MPD's administrative staff presented the council with Mayor Frey's proposed police budget, which calls for $20 million in additional funding next year. That includes a proposed bump in allotted overtime spending from roughly $2.5 million to $13 million. Mayor Frey has previously said the $2.5 million OT budget "was never a realistic figure" and that more budgeted overtime will help MPD stay on target.
