Minneapolis leaders are under pressure after a letter said police spending oversight has failed and called the department’s costs unsustainable.
Mayor Jacob Frey responded after leaders from the Board of Estimate and Taxation and the Park Board president raised concerns about Minneapolis Police Department spending.
The letter described “a pattern of unsustainable and unaccountable spending within the MPD,” which they suggest is a “failure of sound budget management and oversight,” the letter said.
When asked about the criticism, Frey said he understood the concerns but defended the city’s decisions on police overtime.
“I understand the concerns, and at the same time, we’ve explained the realities before,” Frey said.
Frey adds that responsibility for the oversight rests with him. He also said he would make the same staffing decisions again ...
