Maine woman grows 170-pound zucchini, breaks North American record

The Maine Pumpkin Growers Association says Sarah Whitty grew a 170-pound "giant marrow" zucchini.

DAMARISCOTTA, Maine — A woman from Maine has broken the North American and U.S. record for growing a zucchini.

The Maine Pumpkin Growers Association shared a post to social media saying that Sarah Whitty of Damariscotta grew the 170-pound "giant marrow" zucchini she named Secretariat. 

Last year, Whitty grew a 162-pounder, but a small split disqualified it, something the Pumpkin Growers Association said is common with this type of crop. 

But this year, Secretariat prevailed, coming in seven pounds heavier than the last North American record, and smashing the U.S. record of 152 pounds.
