Last remaining cats rescued from mysteriously abandoned boat in Washington

Police in Washington state said many of the cats and kittens encountered during the initial rescue were frightened and malnourished.

On Sunday, Aug. 9, police in Tacoma, Washington, said an estimated 10 to 15 cats remained on the boat near Owen Beach, despite an effort Friday, Aug. 7 that removed more than 30 cats and kittens.

Police initially suggested Friday that all of the animals were being removed, but police said some of the cats were too frightened and stressed to be reached by animal control officers. The cats hid in areas of the boat that officers could not access, according to police.

Before leaving, officers placed large, clean crates with food and water aboard the boat in hopes of luring the remaining cats out of their hiding places. Animal control and police returned Monday, Aug. 10 to rescue them.
